Afghans react to huge US bomb with shock, awe and mixed feelings

Qari Mehrajuddin first saw "lightning like a thunder storm" followed by the roar of an explosion, an all-to-familiar sound for residents in Afghanistan's war-torn Nangarhar province.
"I thought there was a bombing just outside my home," he said.
In reality, the blast was around three miles away, its massive impact bigger than any before seen in the region.
On Thursday night, American forces dropped one of the largest conventional bombs ever used in combat on what they described as a tunnel complex used by Daesh militants in Nangarhar's Achin district.
Achin is separated from Pakistan by a range of high mountains, one of the areas where Taliban and al Qaeda fighters fled when the United States first intervened in the country in late 2001.
Now US officials say militants affiliated to the Middle East-based Daesh network have begun fortifying caves in the region in an effort to hold off joint operations by Afghan and US forces.
Some residents in areas of Achin recently liberated from Daesh occupation welcomed Thursday's strike, which hit headlines around the world and has been widely interpreted as a deliberate show of strength by US President Donald Trump.
"If you want to destroy and eliminate Daesh, then even if you destroy my home we won't complain, because they are not human beings, they are savages," said resident Mir Alam Shinwari.
Shinwari described a litany of abuses he said were committed by Daesh fighters.
"They used to marry our daughters and wives to their fighters, blamed residents for spying, they beheaded, cut (off) hands and did not allow mobile phones that had cameras," he told Reuters.
That sentiment was echoed by Gul Sher, another resident who called on the United States and the Afghan government to "hit Daesh and wipe them out completely."
"We were so fed up with the atrocities of Daesh and they were against everything we are," he said.
Away from the area directly impacted by the blast, the reaction was more mixed.
"The fact is that America used their big bomb here to test its effectiveness," said Kabul resident Asadullah Khaksar. "If America wants to eliminate Daesh, it is very easy because they created this group."
Rahim Khan, another Kabul resident, also took a skeptical view of America's role in the fighting.
"If this bombing was indeed for the elimination of Daesh this is a good move, but I don't believe it," he said. "This is all imposed on Afghanistan for proxy war."
Some Afghans remain deeply suspicious of Washington's motives in sending troops to the country more than 15 years ago, and view their ongoing presence as a form of occupation.
Others are glad of their intervention, fearing that the alternative would be a return to the strict rule of the Taliban, ousted from power in 2001 but fighting a stubborn insurgency that is costing thousands of lives every year.
Defending his decision to deploy the bomb, General John Nicholson, top US commander in Afghanistan, called Daesh fighters "animals" for conducting attacks against targets like a hospital in Kabul.
"The Afghan army, and specifically their commandos, are leading the fight against these barbaric terrorists," he told journalists in Kabul on Friday.
"They're doing it on behalf of the people of Afghanistan and indeed, they are doing it on behalf of all of us."

India stands totally exposed on issue of terror financing in Pakistan: FO

Rejecting New Delhi’s brouhaha over the death sentencing of an Indian spy, Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said on Saturday that India stands totally exposed on the issue of terror financing and perpetrating subversive acts in Pakistan.
A Pakistani military court has recently sentenced Kulbushan Jadhav – an Indian national– to death on charges of espionage.
Aziz shares charge sheet against Jadhav
Talking to Radio Pakistan on Saturday, Zakaria said that India was perpetrating subversive acts of terrorism in Pakistan in spite of deceptively denouncing it on the global front.
“India has been blowing the trumpet on the issue of terrorism since long but the fact is that the country’s intelligence agency itself is involved in terrorism,” he stressed.
Jadhav was an agent of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the primary foreign intelligence agency of India, and a serving officer of the Indian Navy, said the FO spokesperson.
“The [RAW] agent has been awarded death sentence after a due judicial process,” he restated.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has decided to put on hold all bilateral exchanges with Pakistan in reaction to Jadhav death sentence.
The Times of India (TOI) has reported that India on Friday called off talks between the two neighbouring countries on maritime security which was scheduled to be held on April 17.
India calls off ‘maritime security meeting’ with Pakistan
On Friday, Pakistan put up a strong defence for Jadhav’s death sentence, revealing for the first time the full charge sheet as well as a timeline of the proceedings against him.
Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz strongly rebutted Indian allegations that Jadhav was not a spy and that due process of law was not followed in his trial.

Militant killed, 3 arrested in CTD operation in Lahore

A militant was killed while three, including a female ‘terrorist’, were arrested from Lahore today, reported Waqt News .
According to details, intelligence agencies and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted an operation in Punjab Society of the provincial capital.
The militants were residing in a rented house. Four security personnel were injured in cross firing, reported sources. Huge cache of weapons and suicide jacket were retrieved from the militants.
The raid was conducted under Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad.
On February 22, Pakistan Army launched a countrywide operation for “indiscriminately eliminating residual and latent threat of terrorism”.
Operation ‘Radd-ul-Fasaad [eradication of violence/mischief]’ was termed the last phase of the armed action by country’s security forces against terrorists, which has been ongoing for over a decade.
The aim of the operation, according to a press release issued by the ISPR, is to consolidate gains of earlier military operations like Zarb-e-Azb, Rah-e-Raast and Rah-e-Najaat.
Besides ensuring more effective border management and continuation of ongoing operations in troubled areas of the country as part of this process, one of its key features is action of Rangers in Punjab – which has been a longstanding demand of various segments of the society.
Additionally, the country would be de-weaponised through a national campaign and a comprehensive explosives control regime would be put in place.
The announcement of the nation-wide anti-terror operation came after Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa chaired a high-level security meeting in Lahore.
A sweeping action against suspected militant elements across the country had already been initiated after a series of bloody extremist assaults killed dozens of people across the country. Now, however, it has been formally named and its objectives and scope have been clearly stated.
Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, civil armed forces (CAF) and other security and law enforcing agencies (LEAs) are actively participating and intimately supporting the efforts to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country, the media wing of the military said, showing the scale and comprehensiveness of this national operation.
The effort entails conduct of Broad Spectrum Security and Counter Terrorism operations by Rangers in Punjab, said the ISPR, adding that pursuance of National Action Plan will be the hallmark of this operation.
Earlier, military and paramilitary Rangers top brass met in Lahore to chalk out a comprehensive action plan to eradicate terrorism in all its form and shades across Punjab, through a province-wide operation to be led and spearheaded by Punjab Rangers.
The meeting chaired by Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa was attended by Corps Commanders from Punjab province, Punjab Rangers DG Major General Azhar Naveed Hayat Khan and director generals of Inter-Services Intelligence [General Naveed Mukhtar], Military Intelligence and Inter-Service Public Relations [Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor].
Once the action plan is ready, it was placed before Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take the civil administration on board.
Interestingly, the same day the federal government approved a request forwarded by the Punjab government for the deployment of Rangers personnel in the province.
The province had requested the centre for deployment of over 2,000 Rangers personnel, who would be given policing powers to conduct intelligence-based operations (IBOs) against militants, wherever required and with full authority.
A well-placed security source confided to The Nation that the operation in Punjab would be different than those of Karachi and Balochistan.
“Karachi is densely populated but it’s a single city. Balochistan is an extensive province but the population there is scattered. Punjab is an extensive area with considerable population, but neither it is as extensive and hardly accessible as Balochistan nor has as much population concentration as Karachi. Therefore, the strategy and modes of operation have to be different”, he explained.
He quoted former Army Chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani of having said that battle against terrorists would [ultimately] be fought in streets and ‘mohallahs’ for achieving the objective of rooting them out of society at the grassroots level.
In Punjab, the menace of terrorism is double-edged. Here, it’s a combination of sectarian militancy and outright terrorism based on negation of the state existence. Therefore, he was of the view that a different approach would have to be adopted to tackle the problem in this most populated province of the country. He expressed optimism about the success of the proposed operation saying that it was not possible to give a timeline on its progress and completion.
He said the operation would be intelligence-based and most part of it would be conducted on the basis of information that is already available.
Asked if the operation on Pak-Afghan border was joint in nature, he replied in the negative saying that the Afghan government and its military forces had no writ on their side of the border which is occupied by the common enemy I.e. Afghan and Pakistani Taliban, and Daesh.
“Chief of Army Staff Gen Javed Qamar Bajwa had informed the Commander of the US force Gen Nicholson about the operation in Pak-Afghan border area before it was launched. The US General gave his nod realising it was well-intended and indiscriminate as the targets are all terrorists belonging to different so-called Jehadi outfits”, the source added.
To a question, he said that Afghan government has now decided to move their troops to the troubled area near Pak-Afghan border. “This suits Pakistan very well since it did not want this area to be freely available to such elements for use against our soil”, he remarked.
Asked about the decision of closing border crossings at Torkham and Chaman, he said it was essential to curb terrorists’ lifeline in terms of weapons, ration and other essential items which were being supplied through these routes.
“Wait for a while and demand for reopening would be initiated by the Afghan government. Normally, they maintain a stock of daily use items for a week and when they run out of the stock, the panic starts”, the source added.
The source said situation with India was different since it had writ on every inch of its soil except held-Kashmir. Its armed forces are properly trained and generally act under defined international laws and norms. India, by and large, is a responsible state unlike Afghanistan, which has its writ over less than 30 percent of the land while the rest is being held by different militant groups. Therefore, there is no danger of similar situation arising on our eastern border, he said in definite terms.
He bitterly criticised the media for consistently trying to create a rift between the military and civilian leaderships which, he thought, would weaken the combined strength of the state institutions. Such efforts by some elements in the print and electronic media would benefit the terrorists and their facilitators.
Previous military operations
One of the stated purposes of the new operation is consolidation of the previous military campaigns against terrorists. These operations included Operation Rah-i-Haq-I in Swat valley and Shangla district (2007), Operation Rah-i-Haq-II in Swat valley and Shangla (2008), Operation Sirat-i-Mustaqeem in Khyber Agency (2008),Operation Sherdil jointly launched with Frontier Corps in Bajaur Agency (2008), Operation Rah-i-Haq-III in Swat valley and Shangla (2009),Operation Black Thunderstorm in Buner, Lower Dir and Shangla district (2009), Operation Brekhna in Mohmand Agency (2009),Operation Rah-i-Rast, commonly known as Swat Operation, (2009), Operation Rah-i-Nijat in South Waziristan (2009) and  Operation Zarb-i-Azb in North Waziristan and Khyber Agency (2014).

Syria war: Huge bomb kills dozens of evacuees in Syria

A huge car bomb has blasted a convoy of coaches carrying evacuees from government-held towns in Syria, killing at least 39 people, state media report.

It shattered coaches and set cars on fire, leaving a trail of bodies, as the convoy waited at a marshalling point in rebel-held territory at Rashidin.

Russian troops have reportedly moved to shield rebel evacuees from retaliation.
Thousands of evacuees from both sides of Syria's civil war have been stuck in hostile territory since Friday.

The "Four Towns" deal was meant to relieve suffering in areas under siege.

Some 30,000 besieged people would be taken out of two rebel-held towns and two under government control but, according to AFP news agency, up to 5,000 government evacuees and 2,200 from rebel towns are now stranded.

Last month, the UN described the situation in the pro-government north-western towns of Foah and Kefraya, and the rebel-held towns of Madaya and Zabadani near Damascus, as "catastrophic".
More than 64,000 civilians are "trapped in a cycle of daily violence and deprivation", it said.

Thousands waiting
The bomb reportedly went off around 15:30 local time (12:30 GMT) at the checkpoint where the handover was due to take place.

Syrian state media reported 39 deaths while the 24Aleppo news site quoted its own source as saying 60 civilians had been killed.

According to an 24Aleppo tweet, a special unit of the Russian army surrounded the convoy from the rebel-held towns after the bomb and closed the road there to "prevent any reaction".

The complex choreography of this exchange has been attempted before on a smaller scale, reports Sebastian Usher, the BBC's Arab affairs editor.

There must now be concern over whether it can continue at all, he adds.

An AFP correspondent west of Aleppo, speaking before the explosion, said the coaches carrying government evacuees had not moved in 30 hours.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent was distributing food and water to the waiting passengers, who include 3,700 civilians, the agency adds.

Rebels say Damascus breached the terms of the deal brokered by Iran and Qatar, accusing the government of trying to bring out more loyalist fighters from than agreed.

A previous attempt at mutual evacuations failed in December when rebels burnt coaches due to be sent to the towns.

"There's no drinking water or food," Madaya resident Ahmed, 24, told Reuters news agency earlier, speaking from the bus garage in Aleppo where he and others had been reportedly waiting since Friday night.

"The bus garage is small so there's not much space to move around. We're sad and angry about what has happened."

The evacuees are meant to be transferred to rebel-held territory in Idlib province.

Many people are reported to have died as a result of shortages of food or medicine in the four towns.
Foah and Kefraya, most of whose residents are Shia Muslims, have been encircled by rebels and al-Qaeda-linked Sunni Muslim jihadists since March 2015.

Madaya and Zabadani, which are predominantly Sunni, have been besieged since June 2015 by the Syrian army and fighters from Lebanon's Shia Muslim Hezbollah movement.
